What is Yoga?

Om Yoga is an ancient word meaning “union” — union of the body and the mind. A yoga practice is composed of various poses called asana, breathing exercises called pranayama, and meditation. Each of these parts are powerful tools for self-transformation. The poses, the most physical part of the practice, help prepare the body to fully experience the mind. By bringing your attention to the breath, yoga helps to still the fluctuations of the mind so that you are more present in the unfolding of each moment. In meditation, you come closer to a true union of the body and the mind.

It is the mind that stands between the body (external) and the soul (internal). When the mind is calm, clear, and focused, it is easy to gain a better understanding of yourself and the world around you.

The practice of yoga can be relaxing, energizing, strengthening, and balancing, all at the same time.
